The Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) recently released the list of twenty books nominated for the 2019 Abraham Lincoln Award. The complete list includes titles and authors you might already know: American Street by Ibi Zoboi, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus, Scythe by Neal Shusterman, and When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon, among others. If these books are any indication, it’s going to be a great reading competition! Join Barb and me as we begin to promote this list of fiction and nonfiction titles and the Abe Award program, which is designed to encourage high school students to read for pleasure and to become lifelong readers.
Check out the Lakes catalog, or visit our digital media library Axis 360 to get a head start on your reading. Students who read four or more titles from the list between now and next March get to vote for their favorite book. Students who read all twenty join the ILC Reader Hall of Fame at their respective school. As we start to hype up the 2019 list, we also retire the 2018 list. The 2018 Abraham Lincoln Book Award went to Six of Crows, the first book in a series by Leigh Bardugo. Here’s how the 2018 contest shaped up among Lakes students: Six of Crows - 2 votes The Rest of Us Just Live Here - 1 vote An Ember in the Ashes - 1 vote Exit, Pursued by a Bear - 1 vote Let us know if you'd like a copy of the Abe 2019 poster or a colored copy of a flyer for your classroom!
