Eagles Read: Books and Bases
The ILC sponsors a reading challenge every spring. Sometimes it's a team thing. Sometimes it's an individual thing. No matter the format, the goal is always the same: to get the school community reading.
About the challenge. The ILC invites all students, staff, and teachers to read One Shot at Forever: A Small Town, an Unlikely Coach, and a Magical Baseball Season by Sports Illustrated senior writer Chris Ballard between now and mid-April. It's a nonfiction book on the Abraham Lincoln Book Award List for 2016, which means high school students around the state of Illinois think it's one of the best. Learn more about the book below.
The rules:
What the book's about."In 1971, a small-town high school baseball team from rural Illinois playing with hand-me-down uniforms and peace signs on their hats defied convention and the odds. Led by an English teacher with no coaching experience, the Macon Ironmen emerged from a field of 370 teams to become the smallest school in modern Illinois history to make the state final, a distinction that still stands. There, sporting long hair, and warming up to Jesus Christ Superstar, the Ironmen would play a dramatic game against a Chicago powerhouse that would change their lives forever ..." (Amazon.com).
"Sure, it's a sports story, but really it's more a story about towns and small towns and the way people hold on to memories" (Ballard). Where is Macon, Illinois? |
